One of the 20 gauges has a ventilated ribbed barrel, they are few & far between. I have five or six of them upstairs, two 410s two or three 20 gauges and a 12 gauge. They were made in 410, 20 gauge and 12 gauge. I have $25 Cabelas gift card, I'll have to stop by and get some 16 gause shells on the way home tomorrow from the other gun store.Īnother single shot shotgun that I really like are the old Ithaca Model 66 Super-Single, lever-action break open. Thank you for this post, it brought back some good memories for me and made me want to go pick up one of them in 16 gauges that are for sale. I'd like to hear the hunting stories if these old shotguns could talk. For many families back then in the old days they couldn't afford any thing other then these old Ivers Johnson single shot shotguns and back then they made every shot count. They aren't worth a lot, but are a neat part of history for millions of people. Will you be shooting this new shotgun? I need to get mine back out and shoot them again. All of the ones I have, have Ivers Johnson Gun & Cycle Works on the side of the reciever. What did you pick that 12 gauge up for? I love these old single shot shotguns. The other one is at another store and they are asking $149.99 for it if any one is interested in it. I'll have to post pictures after I pick up the 16 gauge. There are two 16 gauge Ivers Johnson shotguns locally, I'm going tomorrowto pick one of them up to add to the three I have. I can kick myself in my ass for not buying that shotgun. I should of sprung on it but didn't, I'll probably never see another 28 gauge. I seen a 28 gauge Ivers Johnson at the local Cabelas on the used gun rack, they wanted $179 for it. These are the working mans type of utility gun, the put tons of food on the dinner table for almost a hunded years. I then picked up an old 410 Ivers Johnson Champion at a gun show for aroud a hundred bucks and then I found an old 20 gauge Ivers Johnson Champion at another gun show for another hundred bucks. Here is the code they used: F1 I2 T3 C4 H5 B6 U7 R8 G9 Knowing the code, a serial letter of BHFI becomes 6521. What appears to be a random jumble of letters actually corresponds to individual digits. I shot a ton of squirrel, a bunch of rabbits, a few grouse, a turkey, a deer, a woodchuck with #OO Buckshot. The serial letter identification is often seen on the Champion shotguns. I used that shotgun all that fall & winter for everything I hunted. I kept the 12 gauge Ivers Johnson, it has the matted barrel (solid rib on the top of the barrel) and sold the other one for $30, So my 12 gauge Ivers Johnson only cost be $5. He had two old single shot shotguns for $35 for the both of them. This old guy use to hit up the garage sales, estate sales and flea markets and buy things and resold them at his houce down on Olive Street, right down the side street Dick's started out on. The first one I bought was about thirty years ago mback there in Upstate New York (Binghamton). chatigny has been a big help in my knowledge about iver johnson, for which i thank him.I have a few of the old Ivers Johnson Champion single-shot shotguns. everyone of the shotguns with the letters only serial number i have recorded in my research also seems to verify the key word FITCHBURG was used along with X=0. the key to the letters seems to be the word FITCHBURG and until some factory documentation comes along to prove otherwise i am going to have to believe what he says is truthful. chatigny has informed me that when he first started at iver johnson one of his jobs was to serial numbering champion single barrel shotguns (by hand stamping these letters). he stayed with H&R until his retirement in 2004. chatigny started at iver johnson in 1954 and worked there until 1961 when he moved to Harrington & Richardson. ray chatigny i now have the key to these letters. thanks to the help of a former employee of iver johnson mr. there have been several posts here and on other forums as to what these letters mean. Iver johnson single barrel serial numbersĭuring the 1940's and 1950's iver johnson used letters only in the serial numbers on their single barrel Champion shotguns. I have very expensive shotguns and its great to see american design and machining compete with ultra expensive modern guns. I want shooters.the gradual taper choked from chamber to end of barrel is great for hunting and shooting matches for standard un fixed guns. The only ones i stay away from the ones with embossed butt plates no owl oldest receive medals. I have many doubles and buy by condition and extras like solid rib, barrel length, chokes, ledger changes, wood condition, an owl head on the butt plate. Pictures would help condition would give value.a few here can give you the sites to get you close. I would think older than the 1940's i have had or may still have an xe's around.
